Battlestar Galactica

Battlestar Galactica (the re-imagined version) was a gritty, re-make of the 70s sci-fi classic series in which the last surviving members of the humane race are fleeing all over the galaxy, in search of Earth, while being pursued by the Cylons, a race of machines bent on eradicating humanity. The remake was many times equated to the firstborn series, but in actuality, it is far more comparable to the 1993 cartoon, ExoSquad. The cartoon followed the adventures of Able Squad, a squad of elite E-frame pilots who are attempting to take back Earth from the evil Neosapiens. Although it was a cartoon, ExoSquad was a show that could be enjoyed by both young and older audiences, with it is mature themes when it comes to war and prejudice and story arcs which were antecedently unheard of, outside of anime. On the surface, these shows couldn’t be more different, but in fact, they are astoundingly similar.

Human Creations: Although the 1970s Cylons were genuinely produced by a reptilian race (also called Cylons), the remake eschewed this idea in favor of making the Cylons creations of the humane colonies, that ultimately turn versus them. In the same way, the Neosapiens were genetically formulated by the persons on Earth as slaves.

Second Time’s the Charm: Both stories implicate earlier uprisings versus persons that aren’t depicted on screen. In the case of BSG, the Cylons left to colonize their own world and hadn’t been seen for forty years before they make their attack on the Colonies. In Exosquad, the Neosapiens didn’t fare so well for the duration of their firstborn revolt over fifty years earlier. Their forces had been crushed and they were forbidden to carry weapons, or obtain rank in the military. That is, until Neosapien governor Phaeton decides to lead a second attack versus Earth.

The First Step/Scar: Scar is the best Cylon raider in the fleet. Trust me, it’s true. Even if you had never heard of Scar before that episode. Scar is the ace of aces and Starbuck and Kat (the two best pilots on Galactica) must undertake to kill Scar. In the First Step, Thrax is the best pilot in the Neo fleet and Kaz Takagi ought to undertake and take him out. Like BSG, this is the original audience’s have heard of Thrax. Unlike BSG, Thrax ends up playing a much more spectacular role in ExoSquad, and this one episode offers compelling proof that ExoSquad was a much better written show than BSG.

Clones that Kill: Though it’s never in the right manner explained, the humanoid Cylons are clones that may not even perceive they are Cylons. Early on in the series, when Boomer discovers that she is a Cylon, her programming takes over and she ends up putting a bullet into Adama. In ExoSquad, Alice Noretti, a fellow member of Able Squad who was presumed dead, appears alive and safe. Trouble is, it’s not Noretti at all, but a clone programmed to kill Admiral Winfield.

Clones: Yes, clones appears on here twice. It’s not a typo. You see, in ExoSquad, NeoSapiens are capable to clone themselves. Phaeton spends a lot of time cloning himself and his general. If you killed one Phaeton, there would be another one to take his place. Years later, BSG would use a similar idea with the humanoid Cylons being clones. When one died, another one would wake up on the resurrection ship, very oftentimes having the same memories as the one who died.

Humans & Cylons/Neosapiens Team Up: In Night of the Traitor, splinters in the Neomegas determine to team up with the people to stop Phaeton and end the war. BSG does the same thing for the duration of the Cylon civil war as the Cylon ideology tears the group apart. Some want to seek out the humanoid Cylons still in the Galactica fleet, and others want to eradicate the fleet including the humanoid Cylons.

Scientists with Questionable Loyalty: In a great deal of ways, Gaius Baltar is in a league of his own, having sold out the entire humane race just because he was boinking a hot chick, and continuing to trade out, in order to save his own skin. Between what he did to the Colonies and his actions on New Caprica, he is the greatest mass murderer in television history. Of course, Professor Algernon on ExoSquad likewise happily collaborated with the Neosapiens. His GRAF shield would have destroyed the entire humane fleet, and all hope for humanity, had he not swopped sides. He didn’t do almost as much harm as Baltar, but his motivatings for switching side are at the very least questionable.

Frenemies: Both shows feature a reputation from the enemy race who fights on the side of the humans. In ExoSquad, this was Marsala, a Neosapien who serves on ExoFleet. In BSG, we had Athena, a Cylon who is conscious of her true nature but falls in love with Helo and sides with the humane fleet. Both crew members are mistrusted for their past deeds: Marsala, because he had once been a leader in the former Neosapien revolt, and Athena, because of everything her copy, Boomer, had done.

The Birds and the Bees: Both Neosapiens and Cylons are incapable of sexual reproduction, this was addressed in the final episode, when a final batch of Neosapiens were developed with the capacity to reproduce. With the Cylons, they realised that the only way for the Cylon race to proceed was to reproduce through the humans, the very persons they had been attempting to destroy.

5Confused with regards to What to Get? Here Are Some Answers
By Gilgamesh
I purchased all of the seasons separately as they basi came out, and I highly commend looking at the entire television series through to the end. The five stars are for the series, NOT for the atrocious marketing.

While looking for the last piece of the series (see the end of the review), I came throughout some outstanding deals (in terms of price), but was dismayed to see just how mixing up things have become on Amazon. This review underneath is meant to support you wade through the mess in the marketplace, buy the series, and take pleasure in it. I in the first place posted it for the combined Seasons 4.0 and 4.5 set, but somebody kindly suggested I post it elsewhere as well. I hope you find it helpful.

DVD CONFUSION
——————————————————-
The show is incredible. However, the whole DVD thing has been a disaster. They freed it in the worst way possible (see below), Amazon compounded the problem by lumping together reviews for DIFFERENT PRODUCTS, and the DVD makers seem to be altering the contents of a lot of products. I cannot imagine how someone who is not deeply intimate with it is supposed to buy this terrifi show. Certainly, they would hesitate to give it as a gift! Let’s hope this solves your problem.

In one sentence, I may say that here is what you want to get: Seasons 1, 2.0, 2.5, 3, 4.0, 4.5, and The Plan. I have links to them below. If you get these, then you will be sure to have it all.

========================================

-Season One was freed as (Battlestar Galactica – Season One) completely with the pilot in one box.
-Season Two was freed as Battlestar Galactica – Season 2.0 (Episodes 1-10) and Battlestar Galactica: Season 2.5 (Episodes 11-20) in two boxes. You may now buy them together as Battlestar Galactica (2004): Seasons 2.0 & 2.5
-Season Three was freed together in one box as Battlestar Galactica – Season Three.
-Season Four was freed as Battlestar Galactica – Season 4.0 and Battlestar Galactica: Season 4.5 with the Razor episode. Those are now available together as Battlestar Galactica (2004): Season 4.0 & 4.5. Occasionally I come throughout things like “Battlestar Galactica: Season 4.5 – Limited Edition Gift Set (2009).” It seems like a lot of cash for one percentage of the full season, but you get a heap of dog tags with it, so if you are into gathering memorabilia, you might want to consider it.
-The Plan was freed on it is own as Battlestar Galactica: The Plan

OPTIONS FOR PURCHASING THEM ALL TOGETHER: BAD TO GOOD
——————————————————-
-Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series (with COLLECTIBLE CYLON). Not recommended. I do not own this, but according to the reviews, it is packaged poorly WITHOUT AN EPISODE LIST. That seems like a horrid idea for four seasons of a tv show. Apparently, it holds the same DVDs as the ones sold separately (explained above).
-Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series (the one in the GRAY BOX). Recommended. I do not own this. Good reviews of it so far. Packaging difficulties were fixed.
-Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series (with COLLECTIBLE CYLON) [BLU-RAY] or the gray box [BLU-RAY] set. Recommended. I do not own this. Seems to include galore extras, but not significant. It also has an episode list, according to the reviews. It might be worth buying if you wanted to get everything together.

BOTTOM LINE:
——————————————————-
As far as I may tell from the reviews, I think there are two choices:
(1) Buy either Blu-Ray set or the DVD set in the gray box.
(2) Purchase everything separately (make sure to get all of the stuff noted above).

NOTE:
——————————————————-
-The “Face of the Enemy” webisodes (episodes shown only online) have not been made available for buy in any of the sets as far as I may tell. What a shame!
-Also, if anybody sees any faults in this review, please tell me and I will edit it. Frustratingly, the makers seem to be altering the contents of a great deal of sets, so it is possible that my selective information has become outdated.

4Not rather as good as I expected…
By K. Kanitz
The finish series box set is a *big* box, not something that will fit effortlessly on a shelf. The box is rather sturdy, with each season’s discs packaged in their own sleeve (four in all). These sleeves are cardboard with flip up covers; inside, the discs are nested in a folded cardboard separator.

Some have claimed that this set would include the movie “Caprica”, but it is *not* included. The 25 DVDs in this set are the same DVDs available in the 6 season sets (1, 2.0, 2.5, 3, 4.0, 4.5).

The series was invented in HD, which means a wide-screen presentation; however, it was on purpose shot with a grainy look to give it a ‘gritty’ film quality.

Why get this collection rather of the six season sets? You get a neat Cylon Centurion figurine (and it’s good sized!), but no booklet, a big box, and inferior internal packaging. I purchased the series this way mainly because it was (slightly) for less than purchasing the six season sets individually; nevertheless, I’m experiencing a bit of buyer’s remorse.

4Exceptional boxed set with seasons one by way of four deserving amongst 4 to 5 stars; packaging bit more problematic for Blu-ray/DVD
By Wayne Klein
THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE BLU-RAY BOXED SET.

Seasons 1-4 is worthy of anyplace from 5 to 4 stars depending on the season. The extras is worthy of 4 stars while the packaging deserves 2 for the larger box 1 for the cardboard sleeves.

Edit: FYI, this includes the mini-series in addition to ALL the seasons of “BG”, “Razor” is included but “Caprica” and “Face of the Enemy” webisodes are not.

During it is four season run “Battlestar Galatica” devised galore of the best sequences for ANY television series whether it be a mainstream drama or science fiction. While numerous fans of the series were disappointed with the conclusion rather a bit was hinted at in former sequences and it doesn’t detract from the quality of the former ones. The effigy quality varies from specially good to reasonable but the show retains the “look” the manufacturers wanted; galore shots are meant to be not only exceedingly grainy but also a bit soft so you’ll pardon the studio and manufacturers for going with their artistic vision. Either way the effigy looks terrific but don’t suppose this to look like a smooth high def show designed to look slick. Detail is sharper disregarding of the “look” of the show.

Audio sounds terrific allround with an active 5.1 lossless soundtrack that highlights the level of detail that went into preparing the show.

The extras for seasons one through three are more or less the same as on the primary DVDs the only new extra (aside from the new extras for season four which I’ll address in a minute)to this set is the BD-Live “Battlestar Galatica Card Game”. So far there isn’t anything else on BD-Live (as of the release date) available but I’d also note that the season one Blu-ray and DVD as share of this boxed set includes the deleted scenes from the original season something missing if I recall in the right way from the DVD (I sold mine to upgrade to the Blu-ray so can’t look at it).

It appears as if most of the extras are precisely like like the former sets with one exception the deleted scenes for the basi season. I’m going to focus on the extras for the fourth season because most of the special features are ported over from the former DVD boxed sets. We get extended sequences for “A Disquiet Follows My Soul”, “Islands in a Stream of Stars” and “Daybreak” as well as 13 commentary tracks, David Eick’s Video Diaries and deleted scenes for the fourth season set. There’s likewise pip’s that concede you to watch behind-the-scenes stuff while looking at the show as well as an comprehensible statement of a lot of of the jargon used by the characters on the show.

The packaging is a bit more problematic. While the big box is sturdy sufficient and looks exceedingly nice, the littler boxes that hold each season set holds the discs in cardboard sleeves. It will increase the prospect that these could get scratched and I am disappointed that Universal didn’t design this set for a more established DVD or Blu-ray holder. The good news is that each season comes in it is own compact box and they will stand up with other Blu-ray and DVDs on the shelf. I personally think it is nicer in conception than execution and wish it was designed similar to the UK boxed set coming in September but that’s me.

Let’s not forget the toy Cylon that’s on the top of the cardboard boxed set it looks kind of cool but I haven’t opened it to closely question or examine yet.

In conclusion there’s good and bad with this set with the good outweighing the bad. “BG” receives a handsome looking Blu-ray transfer with outstanding sound and numerous terrific extras. A terrific series where Gaius Balter redeems himself and Cavil proves to be everything we believed him to be from the primary introduction of his character.
